Commuter

Since August of 1998, I have been travelling one hundred twenty-two miles to work, round trip. Occasionally, I bring a camera. It’s a very, very long drive.

I originally conceived this project as blog—posting a new image with commentary on a regular basis—but have since realized that this would require entirely too much of my time. Still, I think some will enjoy these images.

This is a careless, pseudo-documentary approach to making pictures. I remember seeing a piece at the MoMA which consisted of many panels of (probably 8.5 x 11) paper with continuous-line pencil scribbles on each, but each possessing a unique character. The caption on the wall revealed that the artist made these on the subway and that the marks were a sort of documentation—a record of the jostling ride.
